NameMinistry of Health Reproductive and Child Health Department
Activity TitleWeekly National Maternal and Perinatal Deaths Surveillance and Response meeting
DetailsThe group meets weekly to discuss targeted interventions for the leading causes of maternal and perinatal mortality and to share best practices in implementing Maternal Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR). These meetings provide technical input on emerging processes and issues in safe motherhood, and periodically offer insights into quality improvement interventions such as MPDSR, Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC), and Postnatal Care (PNC). During one session, the group focused on reviewing updates on actions proposed during the review of maternal deaths reported at lower-level health units. This was followed by sessions on various topics, including infection prevention and control best practices, improving newborn survival in West Nile, an overview of the national postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) awareness campaign, management of cervical tears, correct use of heat-stable carbetocin for PPH management, use of the anti-shock garment in a Ugandan setting, utilization of MPDSR to improve newborn survival, and the EMOTIVE bundles approach for PPH management, among others. These meetings were held every Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m., from June 13th to September 19th, 2024.
