Activity TitleDiversity and Molecular Characterization of Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Selected Ecological Regions in Kenya.
DetailsMosquitoes are vectors responsible for transmission of numerous pathogens causing diseases such as, malaria, lymphatic filariasis, avian malaria and arboviruses including dengue virus, chikungunya virus, yellow fever virus, West Nile virus, and Zika virus (. In the recent past, there has been an increasing spread of mosquito-borne viruses such as chikungunya virus, dengue virus and Rift Valley fever virus in Kenya, thus prompting a need for further research (. In this study, we employed molecular genetic techniques, involving PCR and sequencing of cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene to identify and characterize mosquito species in Nairobi, Kisumu and Kilifi Counties in Kenya.
