DetailsA Continuing Professional Development (CPD) session on Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) was conducted at Hamurwa Health Centre IV (HCIV) to strengthen the knowledge and clinical skills of health workers in the prevention, early recognition, and management of PPH. The session brought together maternity staff, nurses, midwives, and other health workers involved in maternal care. During the session, participants were reminded that postpartum hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and therefore requires prompt identification and immediate management. The facilitator discussed the definition of PPH, highlighting that it is excessive bleeding occurring after delivery that can threaten the life of the mother if not managed quickly. The training emphasized the major causes of PPH using the “4 Ts”, which include uterine atony (tone), retained placental tissue (tissue), genital tract trauma (trauma), and coagulation disorders (thrombin). Participants also reviewed common risk factors such as prolonged labor, multiple pregnancy, grand multiparity, and previous history of PPH. Special attention was given to the prevention of PPH through Active Management of the Third Stage of Labour (AMTSL). Health workers were reminded of the importance of administering uterotonics such as oxytocin immediately after delivery, performing controlled cord traction, and conducting uterine massage to ensure the uterus remains contracted. The session further covered the steps in the management of PPH, including rapid assessment of the mother, calling for help, establishing intravenous access, administering uterotonics, performing uterine massage, identifying the cause of bleeding, and initiating timely referral when necessary. Overall, the CPD helped reinforce essential skills and knowledge required to effectively prevent and manage postpartum hemorrhage in the facility.
